Module 1: 50h Yin Yoga Foundations – Theory, Practice & Anatomy

The ABCs of Yin Yoga

  • Yin Yoga is neither simply a stretching class, nor restorative yoga, nor just a practice where one always falls asleep and that is much easier than dynamic yoga. All of these descriptions are far too reductionist.

  • Yin Yoga is a style of yoga—or rather an approach to physical yoga—that can be understood as complementary to other, more active styles.

  • Yin Yoga is a slow, static, and passive yoga style in which, due to the longer holding of postures (asanas), the practice can at times become challenging. This brings forth qualities that are fundamentally different from those cultivated in active yoga styles.

  • Yin Yoga can take many forms; however, in this training, practice, alignment, anatomy, and philosophy are grounded in the origins of Yin Yoga as taught and further developed by Paul Grilley.

  • The focus of the foundational training lies on anatomy and Yin Yoga postures (asanas) to ensure safe practice and to understand physical diversity. Common statements and assumptions about human bone structure and alignment are critically examined.

  • Yin Yoga works specifically on fascia, joints, and the nervous system, and complements dynamic yoga styles as well as athletic training in an optimal way.

  • It is particularly relevant for stress regulation, recovery, and sustainable movement practice.

Anatomy in the Context of Yin Yoga

Aesthetic yoga that aims to bring all practitioners into the same shape is not a meaningful goal. On the contrary, it can even be harmful when it does not take individual bone structure into account.

From this perspective, the approach is also somatic, as practitioners learn to perceive their own bodies and to understand how to practice Yin Yoga postures in ways that are most appropriate for them.

In this Yin Yoga teacher training, the latest findings from fascia research are presented, and based on these insights, the effects of long, static Yin postures—through compression and tension—on deep tissue layers and joints are explored.

Anatomy in Yin Yoga means individual adaptation instead of idealized form.

You will learn to recognize skeletal variations, joint shapes, and load limits, and to teach in a responsible and informed way.

Learning Objectives – After completing this module, you will be able to:

  • Explain Yin Yoga with professional clarity
    – including its purpose, underlying principles, and a clear distinction from Yang-oriented yoga styles and simple stretching.

  • Functionally analyze Yin Yoga postures
and clearly describe their effects on fascia, joints, and connective tissue.

  • Take individual differences into account
(e.g. body structure, joint shape, load tolerance) and vary and adapt Yin Yoga accordingly.

  • Teach Yin Yoga safely and responsibly
with a focus on appropriate dosage, timing, pauses, and clear verbal guidance.

  • Differentiate between pain, stretch, and meaningful intensity
and communicate these distinctions clearly to students.

  • Use Yin Yoga as a regulating practice
to support regeneration, stress reduction, and physical resilience.

  • This module provides the professional and didactic foundation for all subsequent Yin Yoga modules. It establishes the essential understanding of load dosage, perception, and individual adaptation—competencies that are further deepened and contextualized in Module 6 (Nervous System, Trauma-Sensitive Yoga & Somatic Tools).
