Module 1: Yin Yoga FOUNDATIONS

Why Yin Yoga?

Yin Yoga isn't just a stretching class, nor is it restorative yoga, nor is it just a class where you could always fall asleep and which is much easier than dynamic yoga. All of these statements are far too reductionist. Yin Yoga is a style of yoga, or rather an approach to physical forms of yoga, that can be considered complementary to other, more active styles. Yin Yoga is a slow, static, passive style of yoga in which, due to the longer holding of the postures (asanas), the practice can sometimes be challenging. This brings out different qualities than in active yoga styles.

Yin Yoga can be many things, but in this training, the practice, alignment, anatomy, and philosophy are based on the origins of Yin Yoga, as taught and developed by Paul Grilley, the founder of Yin Yoga.

The focus of the basic training is on anatomy and Yin Yoga poses (asanas) to ensure safe practice and understand physical diversity. Common statements and assumptions about human bone structure and alignment are critically examined.

Why anatomy in Yin Yoga?

Aesthetic yoga, which seeks to bring all practitioners into the same shape, is not goal-oriented. Quite the opposite; it can even be harmful to practitioners if, for example, it is not adapted to their individual bone structure. In this sense, this approach is also a somatic one, as it is about practitioners learning to perceive their bodies and understand how to best perform Yin Yoga positions and exercises for themselves.

This training will present the latest findings from fascia research and, based on these findings, explain the effect of long, static Yin postures (through compression and tension) on the deep tissues of the body and joints.

Why Asana Labs?

This 50-hour Yin Yoga training focuses on developing a fundamental and solid Yin Yoga practice and understanding of teaching. This enables you to teach Yin Yoga and design classes that are guided for everyone but can be individually adapted. In asana labs, Yin Yoga postures are discussed, tried out, practiced, and analyzed together in different versions, using props, according to physical needs, and situations.

Lead Teacher of Yin Yoga Teacher Training Vienna

Photo shows teacher Nikoleta laying on grass and smiling into the camera

Nikoleta enjoyed two Yin Yoga sessions during her first Hatha/Vinyasa Yoga training. Even then, it was clear that she would focus less on Vinyasa and more on Yin Yoga in the future.

Since then, she has completed two 300-hour Yin Yoga trainings with international teachers, both of whom studied under the godfather of Yin Yoga, Paul Grilley.

Since then, Nikoleta has completed approximately 800 hours of Yin Yoga training, combined with meditation, TCM, and acupressure. Over the years, she has taught hundreds of Yin Yoga classes, primarily in Vienna. She varies her Yin Yoga classes, focusing on either more physical challenges, mental focus, energy pathways, meditation, spirituality, etc.
