Module 2: YIN TO THE DEEP – Why TCM is a Central Foundation of Yin Yoga
What Module 2 Is About
Module 2, “Yin to the Deep,” places Yin Yoga within the framework of Traditional Chinese Medicine by teaching foundational concepts such as Yin and Yang, Qi, the meridian system, and the Five Element theory, and integrating them practically into Yin Yoga sequences.
What Traditional Chinese Medicine Is
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a holistic medical system that views body, mind, and energy as an inseparable unity. At its core lies the concept of Qi—the vital life force—which flows through the body along defined pathways known as meridians.
For Yin Yoga, an understanding of Yin and Yang, the Five Phases (Elements), and the meridian system is particularly essential, as these concepts are directly connected to the mechanisms of action within Yin Yoga practice. Module 2 teaches these foundations in a practice-oriented way, specifically tailored to Yin Yoga teaching.
Why Traditional Chinese Medicine Is a Central Foundation of Yin Yoga
Yin Yoga and TCM share a common understanding of health: balance arises when energy can flow freely and without obstruction. While TCM describes this balance through diagnostic and treatment systems, Yin Yoga consciously uses long-held, passive postures to stimulate the fascial tissue and the energetic pathways.
Within the Yin Yoga teacher training, TCM is therefore not a theoretical add-on, but a central orientation model for sequencing, thematic class design, and energetically informed teaching.
The focus of Module 2 is working with the meridian system. You will learn which Yin Yoga postures specifically address certain meridians, how energetic themes are reflected in practice, and how to integrate this knowledge meaningfully into your sequences.
Meridian theory allows Yin Yoga classes to be designed with a clear energetic intention—such as supporting regeneration, grounding, emotional stability, or nervous system regulation—without making therapeutic claims.
Learning Objectives – After completing this module, you will be able to:
Explain the core principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), including Yin and Yang, Qi, the meridian system, and the Five Elements.
Understand how meridians and organ systems are energetically interconnected and how Yin Yoga can stimulate these systems.
Design Yin Yoga sequences based on meridian theory and the Five Element framework.
Recognize energetic patterns within practice and apply them didactically in Yin Yoga classes.
Be well prepared for Module 6 (Nervous System & Trauma-Sensitive Teaching) through an understanding of energetic and somatic interconnections.
